Burning fossil fuels to power our cars, homes and offices results in the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Increased atmospheric levels of ‘greenhouse gases’, including carbon dioxide, are a major contributor to global warming.
Fortunately there is something that we can do to reduce the levels of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, without having to resort to drastic lifestyle changes. The solution is simple: trees.
Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it, releasing oxygen as a product of the photosynthesis. As well as reducing the causes of global warming, planting trees also has other positive environmental effects, such as reducing erosion and salinity.
The National Trust of Australia (WA) is working with Rotary International to explore opportunities to plant native trees and shrubs on areas of unproductive farmland. Donations to the Treemission program will enable us to plant more trees and make a real difference to the environment on a local and global scale.
