APPLIED ARCHAEOLOGY - A FIELD EXPERIENCE 
November 22nd – December 5th 2009
(Gabbie Kylie Foundation, National Trust of Australia (W.A.))

This 14-day field school will be an archaeological investigation at the heritage complex known as Tooklejenna (Israelite Bay, east of Esperance) for developing a heritage protection plan and a comprehensive survey of Cape Arid National Park.*

What you will do!

  • Archaeological survey of Cape Arid National Park in Western Australia
  • Mapping of ancient stone arrangements
  • Artefact identification, recording and analysis 
  • Rock art recording
  • Archaeological excavation, mapping and survey at the iconic heritage landscape of Tooklejenna, the western end of the Great Australian Bight 
  • Developing heritage management and protection plans in consult with Traditional Owners and industry professionals  
  • Engaging with the people, culture and heritage of the Wudjari, Nookgurring and Bardok people of the eastern Noongar nations
  • Explore and understand these iconic Australian landscapes through the unique perspectives of the people who have lived, loved and managed this land for thousands of generations
  • Learn a range of skills including archaeological field methods, environmental restoration and landcare, cultural awareness, effective communication with Aboriginal Australians, bush tucker and survival skills, GPS navigation and outback safety, plus a whole lot more, all within a relaxed, fun and interactive environment 
  • Work with the program coordinators to tailor the experience to suit your interests or academic requirements, or to arrange course credit with your institution  
       
     
    COORDINATORS:

    Myles Mitchell (Research Archaeologist)
    With various specialists in land management from Department of Environment and Conservation and South Coast Natural Resource Management.

    COST

    Cost is $2,500 (includes GST) per person and includes accommodation, food, and equipment for the field school. (Participants must find their own way to and from Esperance). 

    SCHEDULE
    Arrive in Esperance for cultural awareness and field school workshop on the first day then travel by 4WD bus along the coast to various locations with the Traditional Owner community and specialists.  All camping equipment and food is provided.  Experience the amazing coastline and outback mallee bush while learning skills in archaeological survey, mapping, excavation, GPS navigation and recording, stone artefact analysis, community engagement, and land care.
